MITSOT INDUCTION DAY 2016

The Induction Day for Students of Batch 2016-18 was held on Saturday, 4th June 2016 at the Sant Dnyaneshwar Hall, MIT Campus, Kothrud. This year MITSOT, has till date, 120 admissions, out of which maximum students reported on Day I and they were accompanied by many parents too.

The Induction Day programme had the benefit of presence of leading senior leaders from Industry addressing the students & parents. Mr M S Unnikrishnan, MD & CEO, Thermax Ltd was the Chief Guest while the Guests of Honor were Mr Shantanu Bhattacharya, Head Talent – Corporate HR, Reliance Communications Ltd, Mr Amit Pandey, Senior Vice President & Head Procurement, SCM, HR & Admin, Tikona Digital Networks and Ms Deepti Deshpande, Associate Programme Manager – HR, e-Clerx Ltd. One common point highlighted by these Industry leaders in their address was that the students should focus on Innovation and utilize the technical & management skills that they will learn at MITSOT during their 2 year course to identify solutions for many issues that our country faces today such as Water Management, Energy, Environment, Literacy etc. Our Alumni from Batch 2007-09, Ms Harpreet Kaur Sandhu who is currently working as Team Leader, BNY Mellon too shared her experiences during her student days at MITSOT. Dr. Sanjay Upadhyay, Executive Director – World Peace Centre, MIT Group too motivated the students in his inimitable style.

Dr Milind Pande, Project Director, MITSOT delivered the Welcome Address and shared information on MITSOT, about its dynamic decade-old expertise & experience in the field of excellence in Telecom & Management Studies for the benefit of the audience. He also addressed a separate session of parents sharing information about MIT Group of Institutions, MITSOT, our work culture and the general feedback received from the parents, post this interaction, was a sense of confidence that their wards are in safe hands in terms of their careers & that they, as parents, have made the right decision in choosing MITSOT.

With the Theme of the year- “Digital India: The Way Forward”, TELETALK 2016 ascertained to be one of the biggest event in Telecom Space Western India.

This one-day Conference examined the WAY FORWARD for the ambitious “Digital India” programme, how Industry can partner in its progress and ensure it reaches its planned goal. The expert Panelists discussed topical subjects such as New Opportunities for the Telecom sector arising from Big Data, E-Commerce, Digital Wallets etc. Another major issue that was discussedwas with respect to the challenges related to “Call Drop” and what can be the possible solutions.

Being the Brand Ambassodar for Digital India, TELETALK 2016organized by MITSOT gained overwhelming response from the Corporate world. The Prestigious Conference was attended by the Presidents, PP’s, CIO, COO, CTOs of top companies Deloitte, Vodafone,IBM, Xebec Communications,Reliance Communications, EQ Technologies, Sigma OSS System India,M Rupee, Tranzlease Holdings, Atom X Corporation, Idea Cellular Ltd, Airtel, Indus Towers & ICICI Bank.

The Inaugural Ceremony Commenced with introduction & Objectives of Digital India by Ms. Shobana Anand, Head- Corporate Relations. She welcomed the gathering.

He said “The Digital India programme as envisioned by Government of India is centered on three key vision areas viz. Digital Infrastructure as a Core Utility to Every Citizen; Governance and Digital Empowerment of Citizens.  He added “The Government is taking giant strides under this programme to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy”

MITSOT -ISACA Conference on “De-mystifying Cyber Security”

MIT School of Telecom Management (MITSOT) in partnership with ISACA, Pune Chapter organized a Conference on “De-mystifying Cyber Security” on 2nd March 2016. The objective of the Conference was to stress the importance, especially amongst today youth, about the cyber security environment in India which is fast changing due to growing realization of threats of cyber-attacks and cyber-crimes. India is presently facing many sophisticated cyber security problems and challenges that need attention of our policy makers. We at MITSOT feel that it is equally important to establish a strong, robust and resilient cyber security infrastructure in India on a priority basis. And that this must include creation of offensive and defensive cyber security capabilities of India.

The Chief Guest present on the occasion was Mr Bhanupratap Barge, ACP & Pune Chief, ATS. He shared the importance for today’s youth to be vigilant & alert and not to share personal details on social media as they can be misused by anti-social elements. Mr Rohan Nyayadhish, Founder, Digital Task Force and Member of the Cyber Crime Cell gave a Live Demo on how our social media accounts can be easily hacked and how we need to maintain a greater vigil. Mr Vivek Chudgar, Senior Director, Mandiant Consulting shared couple of case studies on Cyber Security in the Digital Age and the growing relevance of this sector.

Need to Focus on Cyber Security

As estimated by NASSCOM’s Cyber security Task Force, India needs 1 million trained cyber security professionals by 2025. The current estimated number in India is 62,000. Cyber security environment in India is fast changing due to growing realization of threats of cyber-attacks and cyber-crimes. India is presently facing many sophisticated cyber security problems and challenges that need attention of our policy makers. It is equally important to establish a strong, robust and resilient cyber security infrastructure in India on priority basis. This must include creation of offensive and defensive cyber security capabilities of India.

About ISACA:

ISACA (www.isaca.org) is a professional, non for profit organization with six thousand members in India and over one lakh members globally. ISACA certifications, research and frameworks are global benchmarks in areas of IT Security, IT Governance and IS Audit. ISACA has many years of experience creating knowledge, skills, standards and certificates. Over the past four decades, it has created highly respected certifications like CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor), CISM (Certified Information Security Manager), CRISC (Certified in Risk and Information Systems Controls) and CGEIT (Certified in Governance of Enterprise IT). ISACA recently introduced a new Cyber security Fundamentals certificate. This will be followed by Cyber security Professionals certificates in mid-2015. Worldwide, there is a significant shortage of skilled cyber security  professionals.  The  Enterprise  Strategy Group  reports  that 83  percent  of  enterprises  lack the necessary skills to protect their IT assets. Concept of the MIT-ISACA Students Chapter / group is as follows:

The group will be formed with minimum of 20 students who are interested in IT security domain. It will have one academic advocate who will be a full time teacher of the college. He will be member of ISACA and all members benefit will be provided to him. The first year of his membership is free. His role is to promote ISACA principles, standards and practices within the group. Students do not need membership to form a student group. This committee members can be changed as per your need and wish. The activities could be in the nature of – arranging lectures, workshops, competitions, conducting IT security awareness sessions at the campus etc. This group is recognized by ISACA, USA and once recognized its information will be displayed on the web-site. It will be associated with ISACA Pune Chapter and can take benefit of all the activities conducted by Pune Chapter. Students will immensely benefit as they will get a chance to interact with global leaders, will have access to high quality material developed by professionals across the globe, e-library and student community of the world. There is also an employment portal where students can upload their cvs and get alerts for requirements, provided they become members. Another attraction is ISACA has developed curriculum for IS Audit and IT security. The colleges can use this excellent material provided they fulfill certain criteria fixed by ISACA. SCIT, Pune has been recently approved to use this curriculum.

E-Waste recycling Management – Business Project

The dreams of MITSOT student’s turned into a reality when Lenovo launched “Start Off as a CEO” National contest in association with MIT School of Telecom Management, Pune in January 2016 on MIT Campus.

A Group of four students took their first step as an entrepreneur. The Team submitted their plan as per the prescribed format by Lenovo. The Business plan focused and generated solution on E-Waste recycling. The manufacturing process recycles all the electronic waste and converts it into useable and useful products. The venture has great potential to boost the Indian economy and free mother earth from all the impurities.

The above Business Plan was shortlisted by Industry experts for the final presentation at IIT Bombay. Lenovo received 5000 entries from all over India and they selected the top 5 plans with a hit ratio of just one percent.

Lenovo made the arranged for stay of three consecutive days and provided all the necessary amenities to the 5 participants. The Groups were groomed by Industry Stalwarts and experienced professionals who key areas of Business plan like the Financial and market feasibility, etc. The event was attended by different companies and start-ups.

The students had to be precise in their presentation before the Jury.  The Jury grilled the students on different business aspects like inspiration behind the initiative, market opportunities, the business model, resource equipment competitive benefits, etc. It was highly appreciated and applauded by the audience.

Placement Bonanza 2016 @ MITSOT

MIT School of Telecom Management has achieved two mile stones in the year 2016. Digital India Brand Ambassadorship and Stunning Placement for Batch 2016” in short span of time (Oct – Dec.). We are proud to announce that from current batch (2015-17) onwards, MITSOT is providing MBA in Systems, Marketing, Finance & HR.

It was a windfall of Final Placements at MITSOT in the closing months of year 2016 with 70% students getting job offers from leading companies. IT companies and Telecom sector is back in business. According to information made available by T&P department, the highest salary of Rs 8.50 lakh per year is offered by Sify Technologies & Indus Towers. The average package level is 4.50 lakh this year.

He appealed the students to make a difference to the world. He urged the students the need to feel like going to the office. He shared thoughts on transformation of IT into Digital Technology.

Dr. Vishwanath D Karad, Founder- President and Director General, MAEER’s MIT Pune, presided over the ceremony. He reminded that the words of Swami Vivekananda will be realised in the 21st Century and India will be emerge as the Knowledge corridor of the world. This will be the century of mother India. He also said that religion is nothing but performing one’s duties. Religion is simply a way of life. The whole universe is the manifestation of pure intelligence and pure consciousness. He concluded that Union of Science and Spirituality alone will bring peace to the mankind. Dr. Karad dwelled upon the need for research on understanding networking and chemistry of minds.

The passing out students were blessed by the Founder & Executive President of MAEER’s MIT, Pune, Hon. Dr Vishwanath. D. Karad, in his Presidential Speech.

The renowned scholar and Entrepreneur Dr. Venkata Magetti, Founder & CEO, Loment Corp., Chicago, USA blessed the students.

The number of students who were awarded Degree Certificates at this convocation was 49. Besides the award of degree at the Institute, students were also awarded various prizes and medals for their meritorious and extracurricular performance. MIT Pune’s MIT School of Telecom Management (MITSOT) organized the first ever CFO Meet on Saturday, 9th January 2016 at the MIT Campus in Pune. The objective of this Meet was to give the students an opportunity to benefit from the expertise of leading senior financial professionals from Industry and interact on a variety of issues which will assist them in their future careers. These CFOs represented diverse sectors such as IT & Telecom, Manufacturing, Financial Services and Bio Fuels. The Meet which was organized in the form of a Panel discussion comprised of the following CFOs :

Prior to the event, a small note was circulated amongst all the panelists with regards to the suggested focus areas to be covered during the Panel discussion. This note was prepared by MITSOT in consultation with the Finance faculty and the objective was to ensure that the panelists cover all the relevant points from the students’ perspective and at the same ensure everyone is on the same page.

Accordingly, the panelists too in a short meeting prior to the Meet, divided the areas that each panelist would cover, depending on their areas of expertise and industry sector that they represented. This format, devised by the Panel Moderator Mr Marjit ensured that we had an interesting session and almost all relevant areas were covered. Some of the points that were discussed were as follows :

Mr Sudipta Marjit, Principal, Tata Capital Ltd

  • He highlighted about the growing focus on VUCA (Volatality, Uncertainity, Complexities and Ambigiuty) Environment which is going to prevail in the times to come. This will demonstrate how people view the conditions under which they make decisions, plan forward, manage risks, foster change and solve problems. He added that modern day managers will have to gear up to face this challenging environment. However, manager should look at VUCA as an opportunity.
  • He further stressed on the emergence of mobile money / wallet with the likes of Paytm and how Digital Engagement is fast becoming integral for the buyers. He also spoke on the new opportunities for finance students in digital organizations which he felt will become the norm for the future. He cited the example of Banks which are soon becoming virtual and how more opportunities will arise in the digital space.

  • He shared his views on the demographic dividend of India and that of India being a primarily consumer-driven economy rather than producer.
  • He lauded the efforts on the digitization front through Digital India campaign.
  • He highlighted new job opportunities available due to the boom of Ecommerce players like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazaon India etc.
  • He talked about the paradigm shift these days quoting the example where CFO meets are held on Google hangouts.

Mr Dattatraya Nimbolkar, CFO and Company Secretary, Praj Industries Ltd:

  • He stressed on the growing importance of Corporate Governance.
  • He threw light on emerging issues like IFRS, GST, Enterprise Risk Management etc.
  • He gave the mantra for success to the students “ CONTROL ON NUMBERS” and willing to learn.

Mr Suresh Ghotage, CFO, Atlas Copco India Ltd:

  • He spoke on the importance of developing the RIGHT ATTITUDE – having open mind, acceptance of different cultures, adaptability, need to focus on basics eg. learning to analyze Balance Sheet, knowing accounts in full, importance of starting the career right from bottom and then learning & growing to reach the top

Mr Makarand Date, CFO, MTU India Pvt Ltd:

  • He spoke about the 3Cs – compliances, Control (ownership), Confidence (Stakeholders). He also highlighted about DQ – Digital Quotient, harnessing networks etc.
  • He added that for a finance professional Numbers are everything but also stressed on developing the ability to keep questioning the reliability of numbers and not just take them at face value.
  • He briefly described the Life of CFO – meetings, notices, burning mid-night oil, etc. This was a good learning experience for the students.
  • He mentioned that while the Company CEO is responsible for the growth of the top line, CFOs are held responsible for the bottomline.
  • He stressed on the importance of being a good ROLE MODEL – leaving the right legacy behind, highest standard of ethics and moral conduct, since numbers tell their tales even after a decade or two…

The students too responded with a lot of questions with respect to career choices in the financial space, which option to go for i.e. being a entrepreneur or manager, impact of GST on the economy etc.
